In the college teams of football and basket ball, in both lines of activities he was an outstanding member of the teams. He played center on the 1922 state championship team in basket ball of the high school conference; and on the college team, played forward when they won the conference championship. His connection with athletics was always of a high degree of honor and true sportsmanship. His cleanliness in playing was best evidenced by a feeling of a game well and fairly played, rather that a knowledge of what the score was. After attaining an age permitting it, he enlisted in the local unit of the Colorado National Guard on November 5th, 1923, and so soon was his ability recognized that on November 26th, just twenty one days after his enlistment he was promoted to the position of corporal. On April 30th, 1924, he was made sergeant; serving in this position until May 12th, 1926, when he was again given promotion to that of staff sergeant. His military genius was again recognized and rewarded, and on May 25th, 1927, he was chosen second lieutenant of infantry. Still further honors awaited him as the result of his keen ability and trust worthiness, and on February 7th, 1930, he was selected as first lieutenant of company H. Third Battalion of the 157th Infantry, serving in his capacity until his death.
