Dauth expanded the bakery to include groceries. He even sold fresh oysters, and he thrived with the growing town. In 1882 he was part owner of a one hundred acre farm near Claymore Lake. His contacts with the old country added a continental flavor to the conversation on Linde. In August, 1882, according to the Courier, he expected his brother from Hesse-Darmstadt for a visit. In January, 1883, he was worrying about how the Rhine floods were affecting his relatives in Mainz. In 1885 he made a trip back to Germany. That same year Dauth bought a new delivery wagon and its arrival in the tiny town was a sensation- “so handsome it couldn’t be beaten anywhere. He just about hit the mark.” About 1887 he moved to Denver where he became the owner of many apartments and business blocks. Frank McClelland, his friend of many years, described Dauth’s happy old age. “He carefully husbanded his resources and in the twilight of life collects his rents and muses in silence over his long active career.” Perhaps it was Dauth’s departure which encouraged Damm to try the bakery business… ⧉
