Jacob Fitting

Jacob Fitting and his wife, Lina first arrived in Denver from Germany in 1880. for nine years Fitting worked with G. Winter as an ornamental iron worker, and then the family decided to return to Germany. Four years later they were back in Denver, this time permanently. Jacob Fitting formed the Pioneer Iron and Wire Works Company at 1435 Market Street (then "Holladay") and remained there for 69 years. The business was a family affair with the mother taking charge of orders and supervising the bookkeeping and cashier work while the father and sons performed the hard manual work. The Fittings did the ornamental iron work for the Union Depot and made ornamental fences and locks for many of the bans, buildings and homes being built in the Denver area. Being a frugal and industrious family, they got through the Silver Panic of 1893 which lasted until at least 1900. In 1923 the Fittings built a three story hotel (Lenna 1330 Lawrence) and took in guests. They lived in part of the building for a while, and a German newspaper (The Colorado Herald) office was on the first floor. Later the family moved to 624 Pennsylvania Street in Denver. Built a hotel between Lawrence and Larimer on 15th St.
