Westhofen is a suburb south of Dortmund on the Ruhr. History of Grandpa and Grandma Fitting taken from 3 sets of scraps of papers written by Aunt Eva who died July 8, 1979. Jacob Fitting and Lena Dauth went to school in Westhofen, Germany together when 10 or 12 years old. Mamma’s father was a teacher until she was 14. Papa helped his father who was a farmer. Learned the trade 4 years $75 (Farming or Locksmith) Went to Frankfort to work. Inducted in army age 21 – 1 year in (?) Butzbach (?) – 2 years in Darmstadt in gun shop. Then worked Hoffslosser Schmidt fixing locks in the castle. Mamma stayed home and learned cooking. Then worked with father who was postmaster in Westhofen. Went to Darmstadt to Princess Alice School. Got a job in millinery store in Darmstadt. (?) in Hessen 6 months. Married in Antwerp Belgium by mayor of city. Then remarried in Church 22nd and Lawrence in Denver. In 1880 came from Germany to Fort Collins for 2 weeks had 35 cents. Went to 23rd and Walton rented a $5 room. Got a job C & S from rider in car shop 10 hr a day 7 days a week for $9. Mamma washed dishes and made clothes. Lived at 23rd and Welton 6 months. Conrad Shaefer went to Gas Winter and asked about job. Papa got a job from Winter $2 a day 10 hours a day. (Agent [?]Shoemeeker[?]) Fence put up [?].

Pages 9-12 are selections about the Fittings from the book "German Pioneers in Colorado 1850-1900’s" by Jacob V Schaetzel. Pages 12-13 are selections about structures built by the Fittings from the book "Mile High Trolleys" by William C Jones. Page 14 are notes from Caroline (Lena) Dauth (Fitting) found in her bible. Page 15 are selections from "Denver In Slices" by Louisa Ward Arps. Pages 15-17 are a transcription of a conversation between Anna Fitting, Eva Fitting, Elizabeth Fitting, and Isabella Fraser. Pages 18-21 is a family history of the Caroline (Lena) Dauth (Fitting) family written by Eva Fitting. These notes were sent to Leslie Dauth by Isabella Fraser in the 1980s.
